Training
The National Resource Council claims it used to take 7 to 14 years for 50 percent of a worker’s skills to become obsolete. Today it takes only three to five years for half of our skills to become outdated (Carpe Manana; Price Pritchett, 2000, p. 9).

The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identifies what work requires of schools:

  • Basic Skills: Reading, writing, arithmetic and mathematical operations, listening and speaking
  • Thinking Skills: Thinking creatively, making decisions, solving problems, visualizing, knowing how to learn, and reasoning
  • Personal Qualities: Displaying responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, and integrity and honesty
  • The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills. (1991). What work requires of schools: A SCANS report for America 2000. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Labor. (pp. xv, xviii)

The Institute of the Future recommends that entry level and mid-management workers should be trained in knowledge building processes and made familiar with the new roles of knowledge workers from the start (Andrea Saveri, Institute of the Future10 Year Forecast, 1998, p. 172).

Funding for a 2000-2001 VTEA grant project will be used to help bridge the gap between traditional training and performance improvement for office professionals in Silicon Valley (see Future Projects) For more information contact Melanie Gadener
